Village Idiots feature Cullen, Swinghammer at Elora Legion

The Village Idiots are wrapping up their concert season with a show by Lori Cullen and Kurt Swinghammer.

The sound of Cullen is somewhere around the intersection of jazz, orchestral pop and acoustic folk. She came from the Toronto folk scene, but outgrew all genres. She received a Juno nomination for best jazz vocal last year, and was awarded the Colleen Peterson songwriting award from the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals.

The Village Idiots brought Swinghammer to town a few years ago. He was the guy who painted those crazy suits The Shuffle Demons wore on stage. He’s been a fixture on the Toronto art scene as much as the music scene.  In 1987, he produced the first solo cassette by Ron Sexsmith.

Throughout the 1990’s Swinghammer played and recorded with Ani DiFranco, Rheostatics, Sarah Slean, Sexsmith, and Great Big Sea. In 2001 he was voted best local guitarist by the readers of Now in its annual poll. His most recent CD is Augusta. Cullen and Swinghammer will perform with David Matheson (guitar), Maury Lafoy (bass), and Mark Mariash (drums) at The Elora legion on June 28 at  8:30pm Tickets are $25 and available at the Elora General Store.
