UGDSB and WCDSB come together for Special Olympics

GUELPH – Special Olympics offer an “opportunity for students of all abilities to be celebrated for who they are and recognized for all they can do,” said special education resource teacher Nicole Hearn.

This is the event’s 19th year and it will take place on May 17 from 10am to 2pm at St. James Catholic High School in Guelph.

It will be the first “Special Olympics event for the whole community since 2019,” Hearn said.

More than 600 participants and peer coaches from 60 schools in the Upper Grand District School Board  (UGDSB) and Wellington Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) are involved.

All of the students in the two boards “who identify with different physical and cognitive learning challenges” from kindergarten to Grade 12 have been invited to participate, Hearn said.

The Special Olympics involves track and field and adaptive events.

It is presented in partnership with the Ontario Special Olympics, Community Living Guelph/Wellington and the City of Guelph, and is supported by local businesses including Dominic’s No Frills, Domino’s Pizza, and McDonald’s.
