On July 19, the Fergus Lions Club sponsored its third annual Triathlon for Sight at the Sportsplex in Fergus.
The event consists of swimming, cycling and running elements for five groups of children aged from 4 to 15 years old, as well as a similar adult event. Distances range from 10 metres to 300m for swimming, 125m to 8.5km for biking and 125m to 2km for running.
The triathlon provides a means that allows the participation of children of all ages in a non-competitive environment. Just under 100 competitors from all over Ontario took part, including from London, Hamilton, Owen Sound, St. Catharines and Barrie.
Matthew Bulmer, a Puslinch councillor who is legally blind, competed with a sighted guide as part of the CNIB Blind Guys Tri Team. He was last at the end of the swim, but manage to rally to finish second in his age group.
Centre Wellington Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj and MPP Ted Arnott were on hand to congratulate the winners and present the awards.
The Fergus Lions Club thanked all the participants, volunteers, and sponsors who were an integral part of the event.
Any funds raised through the Triathlon for Sight will be used to combat sight-related problems and help control, reduce and eliminate many conditions that would otherwise lead to visual impairment.
