Town’s annual donations deferred until council considers its budget

A number of proposed donations to community groups are on hold pending coming budget discussions.
Donations discussed at the Feb. 20 meeting included:
– the Palmerston Skating Club for a donation towards ice fees,
– Big Brothers Big Sisters, a donation towards the $2,000 anticipated shortfall in its budget;
– Harriston-Minto Agricultural Society, the annual fall fair’
– Minto Upper Deck Youth Centre, $1,500;
– Wellington Farm and Home Safety Association, $300 plus a representative from council to sit on the committee;
– Clifford and District Horticultural Society, for rentals and plants; and
– Cancer Patient Services Corporation, $1,000.
Mayor David Anderson had questions about the request from the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.
He said typically the township has supported events such as the Bowl for Kids, but he wondered if this is the first time the group has asked for a direct donation.
Treasurer Gord Duff said since the organization is a registered charity, he is unsure if council should approve such a donation.
At that point, councillor Wayne Martin recommended a decision be deferred until the budget is considered, and council agreed.
