PALMERSTON – A tender for the replacement of the Brunswick Street bridge here has been awarded to Roubos Farm Service Ltd.
Minto roads and drainage manager Mike McIsaac advised council on March 2 the Moorefield-area company’s bid of $665,000 plus HST for the project was the lowest of 10 received.
The highest, at $1.45 million, came from Toronto firm Buildscapes Construction.
A staff report indicates the town tendered the project following a successful funding application, through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), to replace the culvert due to advanced concrete deterioration that compromised its structural integrity.
The town was awarded an ICIP grant of $429,550 for the project in March of 2020.
The bridge has been closed since October of 2018.
The report notes the 2021 capital budget contains $760,000 plus a carryover of $86,541 from 2020 for the Brunswick Street culvert replacement project.
“Thank goodness this is finally here … and it’s so important that we do this,” said Mayor George Bridge, noting emergency vehicle access to a portion of Brunswick Street could be restricted if construction work were required on a nearby section of White’s Road.
“Or even a motor vehicle accident on White’s Road in the wrong place and it would pretty well tie things up,” said councillor Judy Dirksen.
