King David  is a spectacular choral-orchestral work that has been thrilling audiences since its premiere in 1923. This performance highlights the talents of student soloists, four choirs, and soprano soloist Lesley Bouza, a recent University of Guelph graduate who is now studying at the Royal Welsh Academy of Music and Drama, with the fine musicians of the Guelph Symphony Orchestra. Church of Our Lady provides an ideal setting for the story of the life of David, the shepherd boy who became King.

Through narration, singing, and colourful orchestration, the audience will hear of David’s battle with Goliath,  the enmity of Saul, David’s love for Bathsheba, the death of two of  David’s sons, and the triumphant crowning of a third son, Solomon the Wise.

The concert also includes the University’s Women’s Choir singing Lift Thine Eyes from Elijah, and Ave Maria by David McIntyre,  as well as the University of Guelph Chamber Singers performing three movements of Handel’s Chandos Anthem #9 with soloist Thomas Rosendal (a PhD student at University of Guelph), and organist Simon Irving (GSO conductor).
