Sale of seat naming rights approved for sports complex in Mount Forest

WELLINGTON NORTH – A plan to raise funds by selling naming rights for seats at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex was approved by township council on July 13.

Council approved the recreation, parks and leisure committee recommendation and directed staff to enter an agreement with local minor sports organizations to promote and sell the right to have name tags affixed to seats in the complex.

Under the program, the municipality will receive $200 per seat from the community groups, which can resell the naming rights at a profit and use the funds to support their organizations.

Wording stipulating the groups would sell naming rights for $500 was removed from the original motion at the committee level.

“We didn’t want to limit their ability to raise funds … so sell them the seat for two hundred bucks and they can sell it for whatever price they can get … it doesn’t have to be $500,” explained councillor Steve McCabe.

“We’re not going to get these groups competing over this?” asked Mayor Andy Lennox.

“Hope not. There’s a lot of seats allotted out for sale,” replied McCabe.

“I don’t think there’s going to be a mad rush to sell out all at once.”

Council directed staff to ensure the marketing of the program and the original placement of name tags is performed by the community groups.

However, any necessary replacement or maintenance on the name tag for a period of five years following the original placement will be performed by the township, after which the name tag may be removed at the discretion of the municipality.
