POLICE BEAT: Fergus man injured, Guelph man charged after bar fight

FERGUS – On Aug. 18 at about 9:15pm Wellington County OPP responded to a bar fight at an address on Queen Street West in Fergus.

Police say a verbal altercation between two patrons escalated and turned physical.

As a result, the 39-year-old victim from Fergus suffered a laceration and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance,” police stated in a press release. 

“The suspect fled the scene and later turned himself into police.”

Cory Allen Kelly, 37, of Guelph, was charged with assault causing bodily harm and is to appear in Guelph court on Sept. 17.

Stolen car

ERIN – On Aug. 14 at about 7:40am Wellington County OPP responded to a break-in at a residence on Treelong Crescent in Erin. 

Police say that sometime between Aug. 13 at 5pm and Aug. 14 at 7:35am, someone entered through an unlocked garage door, took a set of keys and stole a black 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe bearing licence plate number CJBY566 that was parked in the driveway.

Boat taken

GUELPH-ERAMOSA – On Aug. 15 Wellington County OPP received a report about a boat that was stolen sometime between July 8 and Aug. 10 from the Guelph Community Boat Club on Guelph Lake. 

The boat is described as a white 1994 10-foot Boatex fibreglass sailing dingy with lapstrake on the hull and “Old Miss Lorna B” written on the stern.

Mischief charges

ARTHUR – On Aug. 25 at about 2am Wellington County OPP responded to a 911 hang-up call in the area of George Street in Arthur.

Police say officers patrolled the area and saw several bags of soil that were taken from a nearby business dumped on the sidewalk, a garbage can knocked over, flower pots thrown in the street and a store window smashed.

Malcom Bruce Burns, 18, of Wellington North, was charged with two counts of mischief under $5,000. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph court on Sept. 24.

Drug, weapon charges

BRAMPTON – On Aug. 22 at about 12:45pm a Wellington County OPP officer stopped the driver of a black sedan on McLaughlin Road here.

Police say the officer seized crack-cocaine and drug distribution paraphernalia from the vehicle, as well as a prohibited edged weapon. 

Marlon Anthony Sinclair, 39, of Brampton, was charged with possession of a Scheduled 1 substance (over 10 grams) for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He was held for bail.
