Planning continues for homecoming

Co-Chair Bill Smith welcomed Mayor George Bridge and about 25 people to the Clifford Homecoming 2017 meeting on April 11 at Knox United Church in Clifford.

The group was advised seed money in the form of a loan of $25,000 was secured from the Town of Minto to start a bank account for the committee and its expenses. The committee agreed to apply to request funds from the Minto mayor’s annual charity golf tournament. The commitment to the day is minimal, but essential to reap the benefits of a donation.

Phyllis Kaufman with the help of Larry Grummett, Audrey Garrett, and Murray Garrett will chair the camping committee. Food chairs will be Sharon Machina and Carolyn Le May. Finding enough parking and shuttling people to the party grounds may be a little challenging, but Jim Potts agreed to chair this committee.

Sponsorship, registration, souvenirs, security and sanitation are still areas that need a chair. The parade is shaping up and the route has been outlined. Cheryl Tobin has called for pipe bands, baton twirlers, musical numbers, bicycle enthusiasts, out of town entries, and village favourites.

Children will be able to bounce in the castle, marvel at stilt walkers, listen to Dickie Bird, hear an author reading, have their faces painted, and meet a clown. Bands are being booked, dances are being planned, and a New Year’s party to kick off the year is gathering interest.

Glenn Hall noted a website and Facebook page have been launched. Submissions for the logo contest can go directly to the website or may be mailed.

“Save the date” cards are being distributed throughout the area noting the Aug. 4 to 7 date and the website  www.clifford2017.ca. Anyone interested in helping can contact Bill Smith at 519-327-8091, through the website, or mail P.O. Box 250, Clifford, Ontario, N0G 1M0.
