People are already tampering with election signs: OPP

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Just 11 days into the official campaign for the municipal election, police have already received reports of “tampering” with election signs.

“The signs that colour the landscape on this quadrennial event are nothing new and to most (are) a friendly reminder of a citizens right to voice their democratic voice,” states an Aug. 30 press release from the Wellington County OPP.

“While most … respect a resident’s right to support a particular candidate, some feel compelled to damage or remove those signs.”

Police say they have received reports of “tampering with posted election documents” but they did not indicate how many.

The OPP is reminding residents that “meddling with election signs in any way could result in charges under the Criminal Code.”

To report election sign damage and theft call 1-888-310-1122.
