Outstanding Arthur citizen passes away

Dave Stack, a cherished volunteer in Arthur, passed away suddenly at Groves Memorial Hospital on April 22.

Stack, 68, was an instrumental member of many volunteer organizations, such as the Arthur Trails Committee, Arthur Historical Society and the Arthur Murals Committee.

Stack worked on the Arthur River Trail and the West Luther Trail. He was also actively involved in the unveiling of four historical murals in Arthur.

The well-known community member was named Arthur’s Citizen of the Year in 2012.

A lifelong Arthur resident, Stack was a teacher at the former Arthur District High School and at Wellington Heights Secondary School before retiring in 2006.

At the April 24 Wellington North council meeting, CAO Mike Givens informed council of Stack’s death.

“Dave was a talented teacher, a willing volunteer and a tireless advocate for Wellington North and specifically Arthur,” said Givens.

“He will be missed.”

Friend and former colleague Ian Turner called Stack a “Renaissance man.”

“He was doing everything,” Turner said. “Dave was a generous person. He cared for everybody.”

Stack will be remembered by many as a teacher, town historian, trail builder, willing helper and friendly face.

“His loss is, if you want to use the term, titanic … he’s passed the torch now and it’s going to be tough for all of us,” said Turner.
