Officials host ground breaking for seniors”™ centre addition

The Victoria Park Seniors’ Centre expansion got underway here on Aug. 5, as Centre Wellington council and centre members held a ground breaking at the site.

The project includes the addition of a full basement and elevator, expansion of the kitchen and staff space, and improvements to the existing structure.

The work is expected to cost approximately $1,345,000 – about $450,000 more than originally anticipated.

Nevertheless, with community interest in the space continually growing and the current membership exceeding 800, Centre Wellington Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj said the venture is long overdue. She specifically expressed gratitude to centre staff members, who will greatly benefit from the enhanced facility.

“Each and every one of you from the centre, I thank you for your hours and gifts of time you put into the centre to make it a wonderful place – a welcoming place for all of our residents in Centre Wellington,” said Ross-Zuj.

“We’re hoping that the addition… is going to enhance the quality of work that you do.”

Centre member Stan Fleming said the club is very excited to see the project getting underway.

“On behalf of all the members of the seniors’ club and of all the seniors in town who have yet to join, our thanks go to council for all of their efforts,” he said.

“We’ve been looking at it for about five years and we’re happy.”

The work is scheduled to be completed by early December.
