Margaret ‘Lily’ Elizabeth (Young) Ross of Harriston passed away at Royal Terrace, Palmerston on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at the age of 101 years. Wife of the late Allan Ross, and mother of Murray and Elaine Ross of Toronto, Pamela and Frank Perri of Mississauga, Ron and Debra Ross of Minto Township, Wayne and Mary Ellen Ross of Kincardine, and Colleen and Brad Jaskari of Mississauga. Remembered by her grandchildren Erin and Peter Liapis, Mark Ross, Michael and Cassandra Perri, Jordan Perri and Nicholas Stephens, Shayne Ross, Kellie and Luke MacEwen, Matthew and Meghan Ross, Jessalyn Ross, Shannon Jaskari, and Tyler Jaskari; and by her great-grandchildren Claire Liapis, Nicholas Liapis, Isabella Perri, Julia Perri, and Blayke Ross. Sister-in-law of Phyllis Romphf and Eleanore Ross. Predeceased by brother Wilfred Young and wife Barbara, and by sisters Ruby White and husband Bill, and Shirley Gray and husband Bill, and by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Bert Ross, Gordon and Dorothy Ross, Lloyd and Shirley Ross, Ralph and Margaret Ross, and Gilbert Romphf. Lily was born in the small town of Castlecaulfield in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Her parents (Charles and Isabel Young) decided to emigrate from N. Ireland to Canada in the 1940’s and so booked package on a ship sailing from Belfast. After settling in Toronto, her father got homesick and they returned to N. Ireland. They made a few trips back and forth but realized that Canada was the place for them to settle down so they returned. Lily attended school in N. Ireland and Toronto. During WWII she worked at a factory making triggers for the rifles used in the war. After the war she met her eventual husband Allan and were married in Toronto in 1947. Shortly thereafter, Allan purchased a farm in Minto Township near where his parents and family lived and moved there with his bride. Lily experienced a “surprise” as she moved from Toronto, where electricity and running water were common, to the farm which had neither. She adapted successfully, settled in and helped raise their family of five eventually retiring in Harriston. The funeral service will be held from Harriston United Church on Saturday, February 8 at 2:00pm with visitation at the church from 12:00 Noon until time of service. Reception to follow at the Harriston Legion. Spring interment in Harriston Cemetery. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Royal Terrace for the outstanding personal care given to their mother during her stay. Memorial donations to Harriston United Church or Palmerston & District Hospital would be appreciated, and may be made through the Hardy-Lee Funeral Home, Harriston.
