HAMMOND, Brian

April 15, 1946 - February 28, 2021

With sadness we announce the passing of Brian Edward Hammond, formerly of Listowel, on Sunday, February 28, 2021, in his 75th year. Brian was born on April 15, 1946 in Listowel, to Millard & Irene (Herbert) Hammond. Brother of Larry & Ruth Ann Hammond of Elmira, and Janice & Barry Mingo of Calgary, Alberta.  As they have always said, “he was an Uncle that every niece and nephew should have”, and will always be remembered by Tracy, Todd, Paul, Leanne, Jennifer, Kirsten, Mia, Jake, Devon, Matthew, and Gavin. Many of Brian’s friends will remember how much he loved Christmas and his collection of Santas. He was the best Santa to all his nieces and nephews. Brian grew up in Moorefield and moved to Listowel in 1980. He began his teaching career at Gowanstown Public School in 1967.  Later, he moved to Listowel Central Public School, and then to Elma Public School to finish his career. Throughout his teaching career, Brian developed many lifelong friendships.  As a talented artist and painter of oils, he shared this skill with his students. Travelling the world was a passion which he loved and shared with others through pictures. Brian lived for music and drama and had a variety of roles in Music Alive productions, K-W Little Theatre, and the Trinity United Church Choir. Brian was an active community worker, volunteering with the Terry Fox Run, Ducks, Unlimited, International Ploughing Match, Listowel Hospital Board, Town Committees, and various Church groups. The ‘coffee groups’ were musts while working and in retirement. Even after moving to Long Term Care in Elmira, he still enjoyed his visit to Tim’s for a coffee.  As friends and family can attest, Brian loved food which translated into wonderful meals and often a game of cards. Brian was stricken with early onset Alzheimer’s over 11 years ago. As this disease progressed, he moved from his home in Listowel, to Caressant Care, Listowel in 2014, and then to Barnswallow Place LTC in Elmira in 2016 to received added help and be closer to his family. A Celebration of Brian’s life will be held at Trinity United Church, Listowel, on Monday, March 8, 2021 at 11:00 am with Rev. Beth Kerr officiating.  The funeral will be live-streamed and the link available on the funeral home website.
