The County of Wellington officially opened the renovated Aberfoyle Waste Facility on Oct. 3.
The site has been undergoing renovations over the past year to create a long-term waste management service for residents of the county.
While the site has been open during the renovations, the opening marked the completion of the majority of the work at the site.
“The county appreciates everyone’s patience and cooperation as this important work has been going on,” stated Solid Waste Services Committee chair Don McKay.
“We are proud to provide a beautiful site where residents can access our many waste programs.”
The renovation work included:
– closing the landfill portion of the site;
– building a separate grade wall for waste bins;
– moving some drop-off areas; and
– paving the public areas of the site.
At the opening, McKay noted the site was originally opened in the 1960s on a three-acre property “for local residents to throw away their garbage.”
The site was later taken over by the county and expanded to a 31-acre landfill site.
“While no longer a landfill, the county still offers the same services here,” said McKay.
Puslinch Mayor Dennis Lever pointed out the township “would never have had the resources to maintain the site to the current MOE requirements for landfill.
“This has been a million dollar project on behalf of the county to seal up the landfill … and put in this transfer station,” Lever noted.
In a press release Warden Chris White stated, “The County of Wellington is very pleased to be able to continue to provide efficient waste disposal and diversion services at the Aberfoyle waste facility.
“We look forward to continuing to provide this important service to our residents.”
The facility is located at 6922 Concession 4 in the Township of Puslinch. The site is open Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8am to 4pm.
The facility accepts waste materials generated in Wellington County.
