Nater named opposition critic for middle class prosperity

PERTH-WELLINGTON – Local Conservative MP John Nater has new portfolio as opposition critic for middle-class prosperity.

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole announced changes to the Official Opposition’s “shadow cabinet” on Feb. 10

Nater succeeds O’Toole in the portfolio, as the leader had personally served in the role since September.

Liberal MP Mona Fortier, who is also associate minister of finance, is the Minister of Middle Class Prosperity in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet.

“Now, more than ever, Canadians are worried about their economic future. The COVID-19 pandemic has seen far too many Canadians fall behind” said Nater.

“Our economic recovery must be a recovery for all sectors in all regions. I am confident that under Erin O’Toole’s leadership, we will secure our economic recovery and secure the future.”

Nater added, “Much of the work that I undertook during my time as shadow minister for rural economic development will apply to my new responsibilities.

“In particular, long-term prosperity in our rural communities cannot be achieved without access to reliable, high-speed internet.”

In the months and weeks to come, Nater stated, he looks forward to hearing from Canadians across the country on ideas and suggestions to secure a comprehensive economic recovery.

“As always, my number one priority will be the residents of Perth-Wellington. The shadow cabinet responsibilities, which I am honoured to undertake, will not distract from my efforts to ensure the concerns of our community are heard in Ottawa,” the MP stated.

The shadow cabinet shuffle also saw high-profile Tory MP Pierre Poilievre moved from finance critic to the newly-created jobs and industry critic portfolio. B.C. MP Ed Fast replaces Poilievre in finance.

Other new roles created by O’Toole include a critic for COVID-19 economic recovery, to be handled by Edmonton MP James Cumming and one for future workforce development to be led by Manitoba MP Raquel Dancho.
