Minto Dance Academy celebrates 40th anniversary

The Minto Dance Academy (MDA) in Harriston has reached a milestone, celebrating its 40th season of dance.

The Spring Demonstration Shows, which took place May 15 and 16, highlighted the growth of the studio and shared a slide show of memories from the past.  The program was enriched by quotes from graduates and dance teachers of Minto Dance Academy, formerly Harriston School of Dance.

Lucille April, one of the founding members of the parent-run dance academy was able to attend the show, and was presented with a bouquet of flowers by her grand-daughter, who now dances at the academy.

The school started as the Harriston School of Dance in 1978 with teacher Wendy Vernon, and a dedicated group of mothers who wanted to bring dance classes to their community.

The years have brought many changes to MDA, which now operates out of the main floor of the old Harriston Town Hall Theatre building.

They have maintained a cooperative relationship with the Grey-Wellington Theatre Guild, which also uses the building.  Many local dancers and student graduates pursuing careers have been able to work as teachers at MDA over the years, and the parent-volunteer executive strives to maintain the high quality, certified teachers that one would expect in larger centres and competitive schools.

MDA offers exams, competitive dance and local performance opportunities.

The Minto Dance Academy executive is all volunteer, parent-run.  MDA is grateful to the community for their support, both active and financial.  With the community’s generous response to fundraising events, and a steady growth in registration numbers, they have been able to maintain dance classes as an affordable recreational activity for girls and boys in Minto and the surrounding areas.

Dance classes provide a fun physical activity, socialization, self-expression, and more, all while learning a skill in a nurturing and structured environment.

Recently, MDA has offered adult dance classes, which have been a huge success.

Registration for summer dance sessions is open now, and the fall schedule will be available in July.
