Mayor urges residents to wear masks in public

MINTO – Minto Mayor George Bridge is encouraging local residents to wear masks in public to help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

“As we open up … We really have to be careful that we don’t just spike up,” Bridge cautioned during a weekly online update to the community on May 21. “And one of the best things that we can do to help everyone around you is to wear a mask.”

The mayor continued, “By all means, if you’re going out into the community … make sure you’re social distancing, but if you can’t, have a mask on at all times and that will help us keep the curve down.

“I hope to see a lot more masks out there. The provincial and federal government are asking us to do that and I think that’s very important. They’re not making it mandatory, but they’re asking you do to it.”

Also during the update, CAO Derrick Thomson urged local residents to be patient as businesses begin opening their doors to customers. He pointed out some businesses are still working on implementing safety measures.

“Some businesses can’t open right away. They’ve got to make sure they’re not only protecting you as a customer but also their staff. So let’s show some compassion for these businesses as they try to ramp up,” said Thompson.

He also reminded residents to consider utilizing the Minto Chamber of Commerce’s “Think Minto First!” fundraising program. The online program allows community non-profit groups to sell gift certificates to participating Minto businesses to raise funds.
