Mayor eyes piece of infrastructure fund

Mapleton Mayor John Green says the township should try to take advantage of a one-time $300-million infrastructure program being offered by the province.

On. Jan. 8 Green suggested the township apply to have one of several projects in the municipality covered by the Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative (MIII).

Under the program Ontario municipalities will be able to apply for up to 100% of the cost of their project.

And unlike the Canada Ontario Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (COMRIF) program, municipalities are not required to match the amounts they request.

Green specifically mentioned a paving project that was deferred last year, the reconstruction of a bridge on Concession 14 in former Maryborough township, and the possibility of applying for a community centre project.

He said council should discuss the issue soon so the township can apply for something.

The deadline for applications is Feb.15.
