Mapleton extends facility closures to April 30

MAPLETON – The Township of Mapleton has extended the closure of all municipal facilities until April 30.

The township announced the extension, which includes the PMD Arena, Moorefield Community Centre, Alma Community Centre, and the Moorefield Optimist Hall, on March 30.

Officials say the municipality will re-evaluate the situation on April 27.

Playgrounds are also closed until further notice.

Municipal facilities have been closed to the public since March 13 and the municipality cancelled all public events in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The municipality states a full refund will be issued for any cancellations of events within the facilities.

The Mapleton Township administration office remains closed to the public and staff are working during reduced phone hours of operation, from 10am to 4pm, providing only essential services.

“We realize that residents may experience financial strain due to the COVID-19 outbreak and that the municipal office closure may affect payments owed to the township,” officials state in a press release.

On March 24 the township announced it will be waiving all penalties and interest on both tax and water/sewer payments on 2020 amounts for 60 days from the due date. Any questions can be directed to the municipal office at 519-638-3313 or reception@mapleton.ca.

“We are aware these decisions may be an inconvenience for some, however the health and safety of the residents of the Township of Mapleton and our staff are our top priorities and we believe these measures are necessary,” the release states.

Township officials say residents are encouraged to follow developments at www.mapleton.ca or on township social media pages.
