Locals “˜dress”™ up December for cause

Over the past several weeks, Christina Dolderman and Rebecca Pronk participated in Dressember for the second year.

In 2013 they joined the movement – to wear dresses only for the month December – to raise money for Save the Storks, a U.S. organization that supports new mothers.

Their campaign has grown, moving from three people last year to 25 people this December.

Dolderman, a Grade 12 student at Centre Wellington District High School, and Pronk, in Grade 11, noted this year others at their school are participating as well.

“A whole bunch of people that I presented to at school said ‘yeah we’re doing it’ right away so I was happy that they could just, on the spur of the moment, commit to something,” Dolderman said.

Last year the trio of participants raised about $500 for Save the Storks and this year the goal is to reach $2,000. They were at $800 by Dec. 17.

Dolderman and Pronk said they chose to support Save the Storks because of its focus on  mothers.

“I’m hoping that more and more people hear about our cause will consider it for themselves if they’re pregnant or if they feel like they don’t have an option,” Pronk said.

Save the Storks is an organization that offers support for mothers throughout their pregnancies, Dolderman explained.

It is largely based on mobile buses in strategic locations that have sonograms and counsellors on board, Pronk said.

Both Dolderman and Pronk said they don’t normally wear dresses, so it’s a challenge.

“I do volleyball and I run every day so it’s hard after you’re done the Sports to put your dress back on and then to do your homework at night in your dress,” said Dolderman, who started to repeat her dress wearing cycle on Dec. 17. By that date Pronk had yet to repeat a dress.
