Local resident embarks on 60km walk to end breast cancer Sept. 5-7

Amanda Thorn  is taking great strides to aid cancer victims by participating in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer® benefiting The Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret.

Thorn, of Belwood,  will join thousands of other committed women and men Sept. 5 to 7 in a two day 60 km walk through Toronto to raise funds to fight breast cancer.

With one in nine Canadian women diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, Thorn  makes the commitment because, “It is such a fantastic opportunity to really make a difference. After a loved one was diagnosed in August 2007, I had my eyes opened about how many lives are affected by breast cancer.

“When you consider that one in nine women will be diagnosed in their lifetime and you add to that the number of friends, acquaintances, and loved ones, it’s just a matter of time before you or somebody you know will be affected by it,” she said.

She added, “The research done at Princess Margaret is helping to end breast cancer in our lifetime. If participating in this walk will help reach that goal I’ll help any way I can. My 30th birthday is Sept. 7 and I can’t think of a more memorable way to celebrate that milestone than by taking part in The Weekend To End Breast Cancer.

“I’d especially like to thank the Belwood Lions Club for their generous donation. With such fantastic community support I’m confident I can meet my personal fundraising goal of $3,000. "
