Local Habitat for Humanity celebrates 14 families becoming habitat homeowners in Guelph

GUELPH – Fourteen families celebrated entering into homeownership with support from the community on June 15.

Habitat for Humanity Wellington Dufferin Guelph announces the completion of Block two and three at Cityview Village.

“Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty,” said CEO Steve Howard. “And we did just that on June 15th.”

Habitat for Humanity offers a zero down payment, interest-free mortgage.

Mortgage payments are geared to income and are held by the local affiliate.

All partner families and individuals contribute up to 500 hours of “sweat equity” by volunteering in areas such as construction, office work, special events and ReStore support.

Working together with staff and volunteers, the organization encourages the development of life and employment skills.

“The day was magical,” said Sharron Riley-Persson, director of resource development and volunteer services.

“Habitat hosted over 100 members of the community – partner families, volunteers, board members, corporate partners and major donors along with staff.

“Mayor Cam Guthrie, Lloyd Longfield, MPP and Mike Schreiner, MP all spoke powerful words congratulating the families and to the power of our local Habitat affiliate and community supporters…”

The key dedication celebration was filled with excitement and activities, organizers state.

There were recognition plaques unveiled with the Guelph and District Association of Realtors, and a tree planted honouring the volunteers who have been champions in this effort to support the completion of Block two and three.

“The highlight of the celebration, however, was the delivery of the keys to our fourteen families,” said Katherine Gibson, board chair.

“The smiles and tears remind us of why this Habitat for Humanity affiliate is so critical within our community.”
