Lions propose skatepark for Arthur’s 150th

The village of Arthur will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2022 and the Arthur Lions Club is already planning ahead for the big event.

Brent Barnes and Alan Rawlins of the Arthur Lions Club appeared before Wellington North council on Nov. 20 to discuss a legacy project for 2022.

“We are looking to establish a project that would serve the community well into the future. We had some discussions at the club level,” said Barnes, adding members wanted to get council’s feel for the idea before moving forward.

Barnes said the club was considering a skateboard and BMX park in Arthur. He added the location is still something up for consideration.

“It’s going to be a joint agreement between the Lions Club and the council … as to what location would be most suitable,” said Barnes.

“We’re asking council … for your blessing and if we could start working together to come up with some ideas.”

He added that while 2022 is still a number of years away, this gives the Lions a chance to fundraise for the project.

“So we figure if we start now, we have a chance to complete it,” he said

CAO Mike Givens said the project may be listed on the recreation master plan the township is undergoing.

“Personally, I’m definitely in favor of pursuing this.  I think this is a worthwhile venture to try and come up with,” said Mayor Andy Lennox.

Council directed staff to come back with ideas about a working group with the Lions Club and to determine a location for the park.
