What’s in a name?

Dear Editor:

If I said seniors centre does this make you think of old people playing bingo? Maybe playing a game of euchre? Our very own Victoria Park Seniors Centre may very well be carrying a stigma simply because of the name.

Here are some facts about the centre:

– you must be 55 to have a membership but anyone over the age of 18 can participate in the programs;

– yes, there is bingo and euchre, and many other card games. There is so much more;

– there are fitness classes such as yoga, Zoomba, and kickboxing to name a few;

– perhaps art, creative writing or genealogy interests you. How about tap or line dancing?;

– snowshoeing and cross country skiing are new this year. There is music, woodworking and a drama club, billiards and table tennis, a craft room for quilting or sewing and a library that doesn’t even want the book back;

– there is a foot care nurse, reflexology and chair massage too;

– there is always a convener willing to teach you. So you don’t have to know how to do anything but what a great way to try it out;

– seminars and bus tours, special events and the list goes on.

There is a “Talk and Tour” every month for you to find out more and have a look around the facility. Or pop in for information from the reception desk. Victoria Park Seniors Centre is located at 150 Albert S., Fergus, 519-846-9691 x 204. It is open 9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

I am a member, a volunteer and a participant at the centre. I encourage any and all to have another look. After all, what’s in a name?

Ellen Roche,
Fergus
