Dear Editor:

Thank you for highlighting some of the issues raised at the all-candidates’ meeting in Erin, in your editorial of Sept. 26.

Although a family commitment made prior to Andrew Bascombe being selected as candidate prevented him from being there, we were very grateful to our fellow New Democrat, Diane Ballantyne, who represented Andrew and the NDP at the meeting in Erin.

You indicated that you found this a “peculiar decision” given that she was not the declared candidate and you felt that the attendees and candidates deserved better. Many thanks to the organizers who apparently disagreed, since they welcomed the opportunity to have a representative from Wellington-Halton Hills NDP. And no objection was raised by the other candidates; in fact, candidates from all parties in our electoral district have consistently and respectfully welcomed the opportunity to debate the issues.

Voters in Wellington-Halton Hills deserve the opportunity to choose from a full slate of candidates and to hear about the policies of the parties that those candidates represent. Thank you to Erin Radio and Diane Ballantyne for making that possible.

Elizabeth Mitchell, Official agent for Andrew Bascombe,
NDP candidate, Wellington-Halton Hills
