Smell the roses

Dear Editor:

RE: What’s in a name, Nov. 28.

Ellen Roche is completely right, the Victoria Park Seniors Centre is a very vibrant place.

I’ve been a member for many years; going there doesn’t make me feel old or decrepit, in fact quite the opposite. At the recent AGM it was put forward that we change the name, as the word senior is a stigma and it puts people off from joining. Thankfully it was turned down overwhelmingly. When has growing old or being called a senior become a stigma? It sure beats the alternative of not growing old.

In most cultures elders are venerated for living a long life, but in our narcissistic society we seem to think after a certain age we drool and play bingo. I would suggest a visit to the centre  to see what goes on there and this could possibly change your mind.

Roche is correct, what’s in a name? A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.  So come on out and smell the roses and be proud to be called a senior!
