Rose-coloured glasses?

Dear Editor:

RE: Fine with capitalism, Jan. 9

I take exception to your simplistic view on capitalism versus socialism.

I agree that people should enjoy the fruits of their labour. That’s free enterprise, not capitalism. It’s also why we have unions. The bosses wouldn’t give thruppence if they could get away with it. That’s why, today, we have out-of-control corporate “free trade” where people in Third World countries work as virtual slaves.

You quote Winston Churchill. Let’s stop looking at history through rose-coloured glasses. Churchill was an upper-class twit who hated the working classes. Yes, he defeated Hitler – because he was ruthless.

I hope you remember, when you’re seeing your doctor, we have a socialist medicare system, as opposed to the corporate abomination that they have in the U.S.

The upper 5% own 755 of the wealth. The corporations own and control the media; buy-off politicians, through “campaign donations”; and paint any who oppose them as commy subversives.

Well, I’m not denying it, but I’ll leave it to another to close: “A rich man has as much chance of entering the kingdom of God as a camel through the eye of a needle.”
