Gas ‘gouging’

Dear Editor:

I lived in Winnipeg during the mid-1970s and early ‘80s.

For a number of months gas prices spiked during these times. Several gentlemen came up with an idea to confront the oil companies (sound familiar?).

The idea sounded simple: each month the public was instructed to pick a particular gas station and not buy their gas from them!

In other words, if you were used to buying your gas from Shell (for instance) you would switch to another company for the month. When that month was finished, you switched to another company for the next month. Everyone was asked to target the same company for the month.

If I remember correctly the campaign was to last six months. It lasted less than a month before the gas companies reduced their prices by 15%.

It has to be worth a try because we cannot afford to pay any more than $1.20 a litre. We don’t need any more gouging by the multi-national gas conglomerates!
