Co-op coming along

Dear Editor:

An agile and passionate group in our community continues to work hard on this important project, clocking nearly 300 volunteer hours as a group so far!

This letter is the first in a series of monthly updates to keep our future valued members in the know about their upcoming, cooperatively-owned food co-op in Elora.

Why a co-op model? Firstly, and most importantly, a co-op is collectively owned by its members. One thousand members? One thousand owners! Members have voting rights, guide how the co-op is run, and ensure our business decisions are in line with the co-op’s values.

These can include focusing on local producers, building community, supporting local projects, and reducing waste.

So, where are we now? We are currently at the end of our research phase. Since February 2019, we have met with local professionals and received excellent guidance on legal and accounting structures moving forward. Also, we have made important connections with other food co-ops in Ontario, in some cases visiting their stores and learning much from their experiences. We now begin work to establish our plan for phase one of our development. In the coming months, legal and accounting structures will be secured and we will begin inviting applications for the first important board of directors.

Events in the community will soon follow to both raise important funds and inform attendees of our progress while also celebrating the adventure that lays before us. Won’t you join us?
