Dear Editor:

I am writing in response to an article that I came across in the newspaper on September 9, 2016, entitled, ‘Elderly woman ‘groped’ by young man in Mount Forest.’ As we can tell from the graphic title, an 89-year-old woman was sexually assaulted. I am very shocked and disgusted upon reading this, and cannot begin to comprehend how perverted and depraved our world has become.
No one deserves to be treated as this woman was. While walking past a Presbyterian church this elderly woman acknowledged a young man smoking a cigarette, and continued on her way. She was in no way expecting the degrading and disrespectful action that followed.
It seems to be a trend in society as of late, that women are being treated as items. As a woman myself, I feel very strongly about this topic. Women are not just placed in this world for men’s pleasure, whenever and wherever they please, although some people seem to think differently. The lack of respect this young man has for the women in today’s society is truly sickening.
I feel as though this article could have been written with a little more emotion and sympathy towards the elderly woman who was sexually assaulted. I think we can all agree she is the victim here, and we should treat her as such.
