It was a delight to see your front-page picture of the Grade 3 students learning what goes into making a pizza.
I would also like to see the same for Grade 9 students seeing what goes into making bacon and eggs from Factory farms, and the misery these animals go through.
From hatching baby chicks are sorted on conveyor belts – male from female. Male chicks are destroyed, often being thrown live into grinders. Females spend their lives crammed into tiny wire cages.
Piglets, when born, are sorted with the tiny males having their testicles ripped off without painkillers, screaming in agony or dying of shock. Almost since birth female pigs are on their own in tiny cages, for 4 or 5 years, perpetually pregnant, breathing in their own waste and being fed foods laced with growth promoting drugs – grain and garbage including the crushed testicles of their discarded young.
I hope our next generations of farmers raise animals for food, humanely and with decency and not just for profit.
In his book, “Animal Liberation,” Peter Singer says: “Animals deserve to live their lives free from suffering and exploitation. They feel pain, pleasure, fear, frustration, loneliness and motherly love. Whenever we consider doing something that would interfere with their needs we are morally obligated to take them into accounts.”
