Increase in reported COVID-19 cases, ICU admissions up

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Confirmed COVID-19 cases were up again in the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) region last week, along with a slight increase in the number of patients with the virus who are admitted to regional intensive care units.

As of Aug. 24, there were 305 confirmed active cases, up from 284 on Aug. 17, and 273 on Aug. 10.

In Wellington County, there were 121 known active cases, an increase from 71 on Aug. 17, and 76 on Aug. 10.

In Dufferin County there were 40 active cases (down from from 51 on Aug. 17) and in Guelph there are 134 (down from 153 on Aug. 17).

True case numbers are likely five times what is reported, according to Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore.

Hospitalizations

As of Aug. 17, there were 17 people hospitalized across the Wellington-Duffer-Guelph region who tested positive for COVID-19 – up from 13 two days earlier, on Aug. 15. There were 17 people hospitalized on Aug. 3.

The number of COVID-positive individuals admitted to ICUs has increased over the past three weeks from a single patient to seven, as of Aug. 17.

Vaccinations

As of Aug. 24, 61.8% of residents aged 12 and older across the health region have received at least three vaccine doses, 84.2% of those aged six months and older have received two doses, and 86.8% have received a single dose.

At the county level, 62.4% of Wellington residents aged 12 and older have received at least three vaccine doses, 82.6% of those six months and older have had two doses, and 85% have received a single dose.

Deaths

As of Aug. 24, a total of 171 deaths across the WDGPH region have been attributed to COVID-19, including 57 in Wellington County.

Outbreaks

As of Aug. 23, there were 11 active COVID-19 outbreaks at health care facilities in the region, including the following in the county:

  • Caressant Care Arthur long-term care home (Ash unit), declared Aug. 19;
  • Caressant Care Fergus long-term care home (facility-wide), declared Aug. 21;
  • Highland Manor retirement home (facility-wide), declared Aug. 21; and
  • Wellington Terrace Long-Term Care Home (Birchdale and Walnut wings), declared Aug. 22 and 19.
