Hospital foundation, business offer “˜Your Metal Matters”™ campaign

Officials are hopeful those looking to do some seasonal clean-up will consider donating scrap metal items to a new initiative benefitting the Groves Hospital Foundation.
The foundation has partnered with a local business to offer the “Your Metal Matters” campaign until the end of May, directing proceeds from scrap metal donations to the foundation.
“I challenge everyone to do some spring cleaning … and drop your scrap and recyclables at the New To You Shop bin or Fergus Auto Recyclers and together we can support or new Groves hospital,” said organizer Cheryl Rowe.
A director with the Groves Hospital Foundation, Rowe said she and her husband Bill came up with the fundraiser idea and were encouraged by the response from Fergus Auto Recyclers owner Bob Vanleeuwen, who was happy to offer his support.
“It’s a great charity fundraiser,” said Vanleeuwen. “We wanted to create an awareness in the community that [recycled metal] is worth something.”
All those who donate metal proceeds through Fergus Auto Recyclers on Wellington Road 29 (during regular business hours) will receive a charitable tax receipt.
There is also a bin available for donation drop-offs at the New to You Shop on St. David Street in Fergus (no receipts provided for those items).
Both the New to You Shop and Fergus Auto Recyclers will accept items such as:
– scrap metal;
– e-waste (but no display devices or personal data);
– old pots, pans, cutlery, tins and baking sheets; and
– wires, tools, taps, small appliances.
Larger items intended for the Your Metal Matters campaign should be brought to Fergus Auto Recyclers, including barbecues, lawnmowers, household appliances and donations over four feet in length. Neither location is accepting gas cylinders or barbecue tanks.
Rowe said organizers want to remind residents they should only bring recyclable metal items to the New to You Shop during May; the rest of the year those items should be taken to a proper recycling facility.
“If this campaign is successful, another drop-off month  may be held in September,” Rowe said.
