Health officials declare COVID-19 outbreak at Guelph General Hospital

GUELPH – Health officials are declaring a COVID-19 outbreak in a ward at Guelph General Hospital (GGH), where four health care workers have tested positive for the virus – and more positive cases are expected.

GGH and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) announced the outbreak, in ward 4E of the hospital, in a statement on March 26.

Hospital and public health officials say they are “taking immediate measures to protect staff and patients.”

That includes contacting and managing GGH staff and patients who may have had contact with COVID-19.

“We are currently aware of four healthcare workers who have tested positive for COVID-19, and as the virus continues to spread, we expect there will be more,” stated Marianne Walker, CEO of GGH.

“We will work with public health to identify those who are at risk and contact them immediately. The safety of our staff and patients is our top priority.”

Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health and CEO of WDGPH, said public health follows up with anyone who may have had close contact with a lab-confirmed case of COVID-19.

“We also work with anyone who has lab-confirmed COVID-19 to ensure they remain self-isolated for the required period of time,” said Mercer.

“Stay at home, wash your hands often and don’t visit the hospital unless it is absolutely necessary.”
