Handcar races set for this weekend

his weekend marks the Palmerston 81’s handcar races weekend.

From June 13 to 15 the event includes men’s, women’s and mixed teams competing.

The object is to record the fastest time over a grueling 250 metre stretch of heritage railway tracts.

At a recent council meeting, Minto councillor Wayne Martin noted that work is shaping up well for this year’s  event.

Each handcar weighs about 800 pounds and can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour.

Teams have the chance to practice Friday night, with races slated for 10am Saturday continuing to Sunday afternoon.
