Guelph Youth Singers win two national music awards

On Aug 13 to 15, Guelph Youth Singers participated in Federation of Canadian Music Festival national competition held in Saskatoon and had two first place finishes.

The two senior-level choirs won the J.F.K. English trophy, for singers aged 16 and under (won by Guelph Youth Singers Choir III) and the George S. Mathieson trophy, for singers 19 and under (won by Guelph Youth Singers Chamber Choir.)

Hard work by artistic director and conductor Linda Beaupré; accompanist Ken Gee, members made the accomplishment possible.

Guelph Youth Singers won the right to attend  the national level by first winning at the Guelph Kiwanis Music Festival, where all choirs of the organization achieved gold standing and the trophy for best choral organization. From there the two senior choirs proceeded to the provincial level, and were then sent on to the national level.

All competition beyond the local level is by taped submission.

Guelph Youth Singers is made up of singers aged 6 through 1. Each of the four choirs rehearses weekly, with many additional workshops and performances. Their first appearance this season will be at the opening of Guelph City Hall on Sept. 19, and the choir will appear in full performances on Nov. 7 as guests of Guelph Chamber Choir, and in their own seasonal concert on December 5.

The choir is holding auditions for entry to GYS in September.  For details on performances or to book an audition contact Cathy Meggison  at 519-821-8574 or e-mail admin@guelphyouthsingers.com, or visit www.guelphyouthsingers.com.
