Guelph Humane Society re-opening adoption program

GUELPH – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) re-opening its pet adoptions with an adapted program. The process will be completely contactless, keeping adopters and staff safe during the COVID-19 outbreak, while also giving pets the chance at a loving new home.

GHS says it researched a variety of options, reached out to partner humane societies across Canada, and consulted experts at the Ontario Veterinary College to find a safe, virtual, and contactless adoption process.

The whole process respects physical distancing and includes options like a virtual meet-and-greet with the pet a family is interested in adopting.

GHS staff are keen to play an active role in the new process, they are looking forward to sharing information about each animal’s personality and working with adopters to help find their perfect match.

“We want our adoptable pets to be thriving and bonding with their new families, especially while the whole family is at home during COVID-19,” Adrienne McBride, executive director, states in a press release.

“These pets have stolen the hearts of their foster families, but they are eager to settle in with their new family. We continue to have new pets coming into our care and we don’t want to reach our capacity. It is important to us that we can continue serving our community, and part of that means re-opening adoptions.”

On March 17, GHS announced that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it would be closing to the public, including suspending pet adoptions. The organization placed most of the animals into foster homes because of the uncertainty created by the pandemic.

After four weeks in foster care, GHS has determined that the best way forward for these lovable pets is to find their forever home.

GHS has listed several pets for adoption on their website, including cats, dogs, and small pets, like rabbits. All these animals are ready to find their new home right away through this modified adoption method. Those interested in adopting a pet should visit guelphhumane.ca to view the animals available for adoption, and to learn more about the virtual adoption process.
