Guelph-Eramosa may look at ATV bylaw

BRUCEDALE – Guelph-Eramosa councillors have agreed to the possibility of having staff investigate allowing a wider range of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) on municipal roads.

At their Dec. 16 meeting, councillor Corey Woods got support for a motion to have staff study the matter and report back to council on a bylaw revision.

He said the current bylaw allows only single-seat ATVs to drive along township roads, and that Guelph-Eramosa is the only municipality in Wellington County to allow this.

Snowmobiles and two-seat ATVs may cross township roads at a 90 degree angle, but not travel on them. Woods believes the bylaw should be expanded to allow such travel.

Mayor Chris White said provincial regulations on ATVs are currently under review, so the motion was amended to defer investigation of a bylaw change until it is known what options will be allowed for municipalities.

Council will receive information on township liability and enforcement issues before making a decision.

Current rules require that ATVs be covered through an auto insurance policy and that operators be at least 16 years old with a driver’s licence.
