Grand River Mustangs prepare for girls’ hockey season

CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Grand River Mustangs Girls’ Hockey Association is hoping to have a successful 2021/2022 season, making as many preparations as they can with changing COVID-19 regulations.

“We’re still in the planning [stages],” said association president Mindy Ferguson in a phone interview.

Though last year’s season was shortened due to the pandemic, the league is in a strong financial position, as outlined in a letter from director of player development Dan Gilles, after the first executive committee meeting of the season.

“The strong position of the league will allow it to operate in 2021/22 and make new investments such as new jerseys, iPads for timekeepers, and an investment in skills development programs.”

At the committee meeting, local league vice president Kelly Brown commented on his hopes that they will keep up the same level of frequent wins that they’ve had in the last five years.

Professional and experienced players have been arranged to coach for the season by rep program vice president Steve Fogarty.

Ferguson detailed her excitement to start the new season to the Advertiser.

“We’re looking forward to getting our players back on the ice,” though that won’t be happening until the end of August, she said.

A normal season tends to consist of 15 to 18 teams, from developmental, with players at the age of four, to intermediate, with players 18 to 21.

Registration is currently open on the Mustangs’ website, with no initial payment required to register at this time.

Ferguson encouraged registering as early as possible as it helps the association estimate the numbers they’ll have.

Ferguson emphasized that the Mustangs welcome new players, as they are “encouraging folks to think about girl’s hockey.”

Updates on the season will be posted at https://mustangsgirlshockey.ca.
