Gardening conference is Jan. 27

The Elora and Salem Horticultural Society’s 11th annual gardening confer­ence is set for Jan. 27 9am to 3:30pm at Aboyne Hall.
Topics this year are: Whis­pers in the Wind – The Tales of the Trees –  stories of survival, pest tolerance, old age and climate moderation.
Get a sneak peak at a tree’s wish list of things people can do to help them in gardens, and key ways trees help gar­dens. It is a presented by Sean Fox, horticulturist at the University of Guelph.
At the arboretum he oversees more than 30 woody plant collections represented by over 1,700 different types of trees and shrubs from around the world. Aldona Satterthwaite, edi­tor-in-chief of Canadian Gardening magazine, will speak on Punching Up Your Garden With Colour. Her presentation will focus on how to use plants, accessories, paint, hardscaping, to create eye-pleas­ing gardens.
There will be a session of Ask the Pond Professor,  with Lou Maieron, of Silver Creek Aquaculture, as well as dem­on­strations on Red Osier twig designs by Annerose Schmidt, and flower designs for spring by Sublime Flowers & Décor, of Fergus.
There will again be garden booths and door prizes.
Proceeds from the confer­ence go into the community in the form of grants to area schools, Elora to Cataract Trails, and other public space beautification projects in Cen­tre Wellington Township.
