Garden tour to benefit local foodbank

The Horticultural Society here is holding its annual garden tour on June 22, between 12:30 and 4:30pm, rain or shine.

The self-guided tour is free with a donation to the local food bank.

There are several gardens available.

6827 2nd Line, Garafraxa

The large farm property offers a variety of garden areas. Adjacent to the house the gardens are enhanced by unique pottery creations.

Away from the house explore the interesting water feature and bog area, as well as the recently developed scree area. Enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the garden created in the old barn foundation, then admire the lush vegetable garden. To round out the visit, the owner will be showing and selling her pottery.

856 Gzowski Street Fergus

Hidden behind the tall wooden fence is a surprise. This unique garden demonstrates what can be achieved in a relatively long and narrow lot. Hardscape features lead visitors through various rooms, such as the terrace and the grotto, which are connected by the herb garden, the rose garden, and other garden areas. Ponds, plantings, hardscaping and the lighting combine to produce a stunning and inviting oasis.

250 John Street Fergus

Approaching the house from one side, a delightful sitting area invites visitors to linger, but do explore further. Plant lovers will find it hard to leave the lovely garden, with colours, textures and varieties in abundance. The garden, created over a period of 10 years, has a combination of sun and shade. Two old black iron stoves, as well as a number of iron planters, serve as focal points within the large perennial collection.

675 Athol St, Fergus

A fine rose garden welcomes visitors. As they continue through the gate to the back yard, they will find it hard to believe that the whole garden was redesigned and replanted less than three years ago. Shade and sun provide habitats for a wide variety of plants and trees. The design, with distinct areas through which to wander, makes the garden seem larger and provides attractions at every turn.

Grand River Arboretum, Beatty Line and Colquhoun

This is one of Fergus’ best kept secrets. This beautiful arboretum is operated by the Fergus Lions Club.

The area stretches along the Grand River, and offers scenic walking trails, benches to relax, and great views. The trees in thearboretum have been planted in memory of loved ones, or to mark special occasions. Members of the Horticultural Society and the Lions Club will meet and greet all visitors.

There will be light refreshments provided at this stop, and it is a perfect place to have a picnic lunch.
