Funds approved to repair Lions Park fountain

Town council has approved spending up to $10,000 to restore the fountain at the entrance to Palmerston Lions park to working order.

Last summer Palmerston Lions members painted the interior of the fountain with a sealant to prevent leaks, and the Minto public works had the pump running occasionally, but there was difficulty getting a suitable pump and there appear to be leaks in the internal plumbing, explained CAO Bill White in a staff report at the July 7 council meeting.

This spring recreation staff had the fountain working with an older pump in time for the Norwell Reunion, but since then it has not been running due to leaks.

“Staff did the best they can to get the fountain to run with no identified budget. If council allocates funding, the goal is to have the fountain run on a timer or photo cell during daylight hours from the May long weekend to mid-September. Council is asked to approve up to $10,000 to line the bowl, fix plumbing and secure a proper pump,” states White.

Once the fountain is working, the Lions  have confirmed they will drain/store the pump, protect the bowl with a tarp and perform other maintenance.
