Fire Chief Rick Richardson is warning residents of a recall on a barbecue that may have caused at least 15 grill fires in Canada since 2006.
Fiesta Barbeques is voluntarily recalling its Blue Ember Gas Grills in conjunction with Health Canada and the Consumer Product Safety Commission in the U.S.
Between November 2006 to May 2009 over 25,300 of the recalled barbecues were sold at Sears, Home Depot, Wal-mart, The Brick, A&P Canada, and various other retailers. Fiesta Barbeques, of Brampton, is the importer for the Chinese-made units.
If the barbecue grill is not assembled properly, the burner hose may be exposed to excessive heat, posing a fire and burn hazard to users.
There have been 31 incidents of grill fires in Canada associated with these barbecues. Fiesta officials believe 15 of those incidents were possibly related to the hazard identified. Fiesta is not aware of any injuries resulting from those 15 incidents.
In the United States, Fiesta received an additional 161 reports of grill fires, resulting in nine injuries, including two incidents of major burns on different parts of the body, six incidents of minor burns and one incident involving temporary hearing loss.
Health Canada has not received reports of injuries or incidents related to the use of those barbecues.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled grill and contact Fiesta Barbeques to obtain a free grease pan assembly and instructions for installing the parts.
Consumers are also advised to not use the grill until the new grease pan assembly has been installed. Consumers should also inspect the gas burner hose and regulator, which will be replaced free of charge if there are signs of damage.

This recall involves certain liquid propane and natural gas outdoor barbecue grills sold under the brand name Blue Ember. The barbecue is a cabinet style grill with two doors, and was sold in two colour combinations: silver and black, or silver and gray.
The words “Blue Ember” are printed on the hood of the grill.
