Fergus Lions Club, Reliable Ford launch annual Christmas drive

Campaign asks residents to donate money or gift cards for local families in need

FERGUS – The Fergus Lions Club has launched its annual Christmas drive in cooperation with Reliable Ford – and for the third year in a row, officials are asking for gift cards in lieu of actual toys.

“The reason this event has been a success for over two decades is the generosity of the community we serve. Once again, we ask for your support,” Lions Club member and drive chairman Gary Waterhouse stated in a Nov. 9 press release.

The campaign, rebranded as part of the larger Centre Wellington Food Bank Christmas Drive, asks members of the public to purchase gift cards or make cheque donations (made out to the food bank) to help local families purchase gifts, food and other items in time for Christmas.

Anyone interested in donating can drop off items at Reliable Ford at 990 Tower St. S. (Highway 6) by Dec. 6.

Donations will also be accepted at the Fergus Lion’s Annual Christmas Parade on Dec. 3.

“We strongly encourage donors to purchase gift cards from local businesses. Let’s all shop local,” Waterhouse stated.

Officials ask those purchasing gift cards to attach the original receipt (in an envelope, by elastic band or tape) to the card to help food bank volunteers with distribution.

“We are ever aware that this holiday will be a challenging time for many as the cost of living impacts us all,” Waterhouse noted.

“Together, we will do our part to continue to support the [food bank] to ensure the spirit of Christmas is alive and well for all ages in Centre Wellington.”

The Fergus Lions Club and Reliable Ford have annually joined forces for the toy drive for over 20 years.

The food bank no longer has the ability to store large amounts of toys and with COVID-19 protocols in place the last few years, the campaign has moved to gift card and monetary donations.

“The team at Reliable Ford and the members of the Fergus Lions Club wish everyone a happy, healthy holiday season,” stated Waterhouse.

“We thank you in advance for you kind support.”
