ELMIRA – The Elmira Theatre Company is holding auditions for its next production, Tuesdays with Morrie.
Auditions are slated for Dec. 4 and 5 at 7pm with callbacks on Dec. 11.
The play, by Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom is based on the book by Mitch Albom
In Elmira it will be directed by Sue Garner and produced by Bev Dietrich.
Some 16 years after graduation, Mitch, a successful sportscaster, happens to catch Morrie, his former university professor, on a TV interview.
After learning that Morrie is battling ALS, Mitch goes to see Morrie. What starts as a simple duty visit turns into a weekly pilgrimage and Morrie’s final class on the meaning of life. The play is based on a true story.
“If you are an actor looking for a challenge, this could be for you,” states a press release from the theatre company.
“You need to be interested in text and character work.”
The play itself is quite short, but it packs a punch.
This play contains comic and dramatic moments, and an incredibly life-affirming story.
Cast Requirements
There are two challenging male roles in this play:
– Morrie Schwarz – 78, college prof. witty, intelligent, lover of life, also dying of ALS; and
– Mitch Albom – 37 years old – career-driven sports journalist and Morrie’s former student, now taking Morrie’s last “class” on the meaning of life.
Auditions will be readings from the script.

Rehearsals
There will be a few rehearsals in January and early February, then three times a week after Feb 19.
Performances
There will be 11 shows Thursdays through Sundays from April 27 to May 13, 2023.
All shows are at 8pm except Sundays which are 2pm matinees.
The play will be adjudicated in Elmira through Western Ontario Drama League, as out-of-festival (no travel). The adjudication date will be April 28.
