COVID-19 in schools and daycare centres: the latest count

GUELPH – As of Dec. 28, 16 schools in the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) region are reporting active cases of COVID-19.

Since September, cases have been reported at 56 schools and five child care facilities in the region.

Almost all the cases are school-related, meaning at least one classroom had to be closed because students/staff may have been exposed.

Confirmed cases are currently being reported at the following schools:

As of Dec. 22, there have been 7,292 cases reported in Ontario schools, at least 5,103 of them affecting students (some individuals are not identified).

Overall, 20.22% of schools across the province (976 out of 4,828) currently have reported cases as of Dec. 22 – and all schools are closed on winter break.

“This is a reminder that COVID-19 is still present in our region and that keeping our schools as safe as possible will take a community-wide effort,” stated Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health and CEO of WDGPH, in a recent press release.

She added, “Fewer cases in our community means fewer cases in our schools.”

In all cases, officials conduct case management and contact tracing and students and families are advised to follow the direction of public health and their school board or child care provider.
