COVID-19 cases up significantly in region following three weeks of decline

WELLINGTON COUNTY – After three weeks of steady decline, confirmed COVID-19 cases are up significantly in the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) region this week, while local hospitalizations are down for the second straight week.

As of Sept. 21, there are 205 confirmed active cases in the region, up 29% from 159 on Sept. 14.

In Wellington County, there are 68 known active cases, up 74% from 39 a week ago.

In Dufferin County there are 27 active cases (down from 34 on Sept. 14) and in Guelph there are 103 (up from 80).

True case numbers are likely five times what is reported, according to Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore.

Hospitalizations

As of Sept. 18, there were 12 people hospitalized across the region who tested positive for COVID-19, down significantly from 20 four days earlier.

The number of COVID-positive individuals admitted to ICUs is two (up from one since Sept. 14).

Vaccinations

As of Sept. 21, 56.6% of residents aged 12 and older across the health region have received at least three vaccine doses, 84.3% of those aged six months and older have received two doses, and 87% have received a single dose.

At the county level, 56.8% of Wellington residents aged 12 and older have received at least three vaccine doses, 82.6% of those six months and older have had two doses, and 85% have received a single dose.

Deaths

As of Sept. 21, a total of 175 deaths across the WDGPH region have been attributed to COVID-19 (up from 173 a week ago), including 57 in Wellington County (unchanged).

Outbreaks

As of Sept. 21, there are two active COVID-19 (facility-wide) outbreaks at health care facilities in the region: at Caressant Care Arthur, declared Sept. 9, and at Elliott Community retirement home in Guelph, declared Sept. 18.

A previous facility-wide outbreak at Highland Manor retirement home in Fergus was declared over on Sept. 17.
