COVID-19 cases steady, hospitalizations up slightly this week

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Confirmed COVID-19 cases remained steady in the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) region this week, while hospitalizations are up but with less patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU).

As of Aug. 31, there were 304 confirmed active cases in the region, virtually unchanged from 305 on Aug. 24.

In Wellington County, there are 135 known active cases, up from 121 a week ago.

In Dufferin County there are 32 active cases (down from from 40 on Aug. 24) and in Guelph there are 136 (134 on Aug. 24).

True case numbers are about five times what is reported, according to Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore.

Hospitalizations

As of Aug. 28, there were 25 people hospitalized across the region who tested positive for COVID-19, up from 17 on Aug. 17.

The number of COVID-positive individuals admitted to ICUs had decreased to one on Aug. 28 after ballooning to seven on Aug. 17.

Vaccinations

As of Aug. 31, 61.9% of residents aged 12 and older across the health region have received at least three vaccine doses, 84.2% of those aged six months and older have received two doses, and 86.9% have received a single dose.

At the county level, 62.5% of Wellington residents aged 12 and older have received at least three vaccine doses, 82.6% of those six months and older have had two doses, and 85% have received a single dose.

Deaths

As of Aug. 31, a total of 172 deaths across the WDGPH region have been attributed to COVID-19, including 57 in Wellington County.

Outbreaks

As of Aug. 26, there were eight active COVID-19 outbreaks at health care facilities in the region, including the following in the county:

• Caressant Care Arthur long-term care home (Ash unit), declared Aug. 19;
• Caressant Care Fergus long-term care home (facility-wide), declared Aug. 21;
• Highland Manor retirement home (facility-wide), declared Aug. 21; and
• Wellington Terrace Long-Term Care Home (Birchdale and Walnut wings), declared Aug. 22 and 19.
