COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations up in WDGPH region

WELLINGTON COUNTY – After a steady decline since the end of April, COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are on the rise in the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) region.

There are 118 confirmed active cases in the region as of June 29, up 26% from 94 one week ago and 34% from 88 two weeks ago.

Prior to that, cases had been declining since late April.

There are 18 known active cases in Wellington County as of June 29, (unchanged since June 22), 29 in Dufferin County (up from 20), and 70 in Guelph (up from 54).

Hospitalizations

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 across the region has doubled over the last month, from five on May 31 to at least 10 as of June 29.

There are nine COVID patients at Guelph General Hospital and one between the three hospitals in Fergus, Mount Forest and Palmerston (officials would not say which site has the patient).

None of the COVID patients are in an intensive care unit.

The Advertiser did not immediately hear back from officials with Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville about COVID-19 patients there.

Vaccinations

Across the WDGPH region, as of June 29, there were 157,802 people (59.6% of those 12 and older) who received three vaccine doses and 258,205 people (88.9% of those five and older) who received two doses.

At the county level, as of June 22, there were 50,357 people in Wellington (60.5% of those 12 and older) who received three vaccine doses, 80,200 people (87.4% of those five and older) who received two doses, and just over 2,000 who received a single dose.

Deaths

There have been no new deaths reported in several weeks.

To date, a total of 162 deaths across the WDGPH region have been attributed to COVID-19, including 53 in Wellington County.

Outbreaks

A COVID-19 outbreak at the Heritage River Retirement Residence in Elora, declared on June 17, continues as of June 24.
